About the BSMAS

The Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale was developed by Andreassen and colleagues (2016) based on the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale. It uses six core elements of addiction to assess problematic social media use.

The six components measured are: Salience (preoccupation), Tolerance (needing more), Mood modification (using for emotional regulation), Relapse (failed attempts to reduce), Withdrawal (distress when unable to use), and Conflict (negative life impact).

A score of 19 or above, or scoring 3+ on at least 4 items, may indicate problematic use that warrants further attention. However, this is a screening tool rather than a diagnostic instrument.
