The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was developed by Buysse and colleagues in 1989 to measure sleep quality and disturbances over a one-month period. It is one of the most widely used sleep questionnaires in clinical and research settings.
The PSQI measures seven components of sleep: subjective quality, latency (time to fall asleep), duration, efficiency (time asleep vs time in bed), disturbances, medication use, and daytime dysfunction. Each component is scored 0-3, yielding a global score of 0-21.
A global score greater than 5 indicates poor sleep quality with a sensitivity of 89.6% and specificity of 86.5% for identifying sleep disorders.
